More About North Bay Road

North Bay Road, which runs in two sections from 20th Street to 32nd Street and from 42nd Street to 64th Street, is the address of choice for famous and wealthy residents who like to retreat behind the high walls and gates of their waterfront estates. Although it’s parallel to busy Alton Road, North Bay Road is a tranquil residential drive with little through traffic.

Places To Go and Things To Do Around North Bay Road

Close to the bountiful amenities and vitality of Miami Beach, yet exclusive and tranquil, North Bay Road, especially the northern section, rivals Star Island as an address of choice for some of the biggest names in the entertainment world. Homes on the dry lots on the inland side of the road are modest in comparison to the estates on the waterfront side, yet they coexist seamlessly amid a lush, tropically landscaped, picture-postcard vision of romantic old Miami Beach.

Architectural styles in the North Bay Road neighborhood include Mediterranean Revival from the 1920s, Streamline Moderne from the ‘30s and ‘40s, Neoclassical Revival and later Mid-century Modern from the ‘50s and ‘60s. There are also residences with contemporary takes on Mediterranean and cutting-edge modern, both of which reflect the growth of the area. Many homes have been restored and updated within preservation guidelines, while others have been torn down to make way for new construction.

North Bay Road Government, Police, Fire Rescue & Medical

North Bay Road is served by the city of Miami Beach’s police and fire rescue departments. Mount Sinai Medical Center is within the area, and the former Miami Heart Institute on 47th Street and North Meridian functions as an ancillary medical, rehab and research facility.

North Bay Road Recreation

The private La Gorce Country Club offers a fine 18-hole golf course, six tennis courts and a pool. The city-owned Miami Beach Golf Club on Alton Road has an 18-hole course, and Bayshore Municipal Golf Course on Prairie Avenue has nine holes of par-3 play. Both are open to the public all year long.

Pinetree Park on Pine Tree Drive has a fenced dog park popular with residents.

Fisher Park at Alton Road and 50th Street, and La Gorce Park on Alton Road both have playgrounds and tot lots.

North Bay Road Shopping

41st Street has a range of neighborhood retailers, with a Walgreens and CVS/pharmacy, hardware store, French bakeries, kosher stores, a deli, ladies’ and children’s boutiques, hairdressers, banks and a post office.

A Publix Super Market is a five-minute drive north or south. The swanky Bal Harbour Shops and Aventura Mall are not far away either, and the Shops at Midtown are just across the Julia Tuttle Causeway from 41st Street.

North Bay Road Dining

The North Bay Road area offers a nice variety of places to eat, from fast food to ethnic eateries and a wide range of kosher establishments. The Forge, a dimly lit restaurant of the well-to-do, is one of Miami Beach’s most enduring and famous dining establishments and a 41st Street landmark.

North Bay Road History

By the early 1920s, city co-founder Carl Fisher was focusing on attracting people to his most exclusive real estate venture, north of 41st Street, bordered by Biscayne Bay and close to the Venetian Causeway that leads to mainland Miami. The prestigious area drew the rich and famous, who vacationed in his hotels, including the Nautilus (site of today’s Mount Sinai Medical Center), the Lincoln, Bolivar and the King Cole (later replaced by the Miami Heart Institute). This jet set also played golf and polo, and were encouraged to buy property Fisher owned to the east on Indian Creek and near the Atlantic Ocean.

In 1925, Fisher built a palatial Italianate mansion on North Bay Road. His three-story house, complete with observation tower and 930 feet of water frontage, was the largest private home in Miami Beach for many years. When it was offered for sale in the 1930s, the property was presented to potential buyers as “three magnificent estates.”

Over the next few decades, fine homes of varying sizes went up on North Bay Road, enhancing the exclusive character of the neighborhood. These days, the area is seeing younger affluent families moving in for year-round living.
